Planning Before Planting

The most common characteristics of a plant’s expected growth to keep in mind are: size, heat and wind tolerance, soil preference and light tolerance.

Size – The size, in both height and girth that a plant will reach when mature, is extremely important to take into account as overgrown trees or shrubs can cause actual damage to your home and be expensive to have removed.

Light Tolerance – Make a note of which areas of your garden receive the most light during the course of the day. Also make sure to plan ahead for taller plants that will cast shade later on.

Heat, Frost, and Wind Tolerance – Check which temperature zone you’re planting in on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Areas of the Central Valley, including Bakersfield, fall between the 8a to 9b ranges. Nurseries may carry plants that aren’t right for your zone, so checking yourself can save you a lot of money in the long run!

Ideal Conditions – While browsing a local nursery may give you inspiration, always check the ideal conditions for each type of plant before adding it to your garden. There are many sites on the web which can give you more information about the plant you’re considering. For starters, you can check this List of Plants by Common Name.
